Their
first Dublin date since a sell-out residency in the Grand Social last
September, Scullion continue to be one of the most innovative forces in
Irish music today. Sonny Condell
the creative core and inspiration for the band continues to invent
innovative and write music and songs that are powerful, poetic, soulful
and joyful. He is one of Irelands most enduring creative artists and
with Robbie Overson and Philip King creates the signature sound that is Scullion.
Scullion’s back pages include the anthems, ‘Down In the City’, ‘Eyelids into Snow’ and ‘John the Baptist’.
Recent Scullion performances have sold out in a heart beat,
reconfirming their status as one of the best and most popular bands
ever. The
Liffey Banks Sessions strive to offer their audiences impressive
line-ups, and this is certainly amongst our finest. Scullion’s special
guests for the evening are singer Iarla Ó Lionáird with guitarist Steve Cooney, who are currently working on an album together.
A member of acclaimed, ‘The Gloaming’, Iarla Ó Lionáird
grew up and learned his craft in the musical heartland of Cúil Aodha in
the West Cork Gaeltacht. From his iconic early recording of the vision
song ‘Aisling Gheal’
whilst still a boy, through many recordings Ó Lionáird established
himself both as a masterful exponent of Sean Nós Song and as a pioneer
in its renewal and development. Ó Lionáird’s latest solo album
"Foxlight" is considered by many, including the Irish Times as 2011 Album of the year in the traditional music section.
For over thirty years, Steve Cooney
has made a significant contribution to Traditional Irish Music, with
contributions on hundreds of recordings, as well as performing with
artists including Sharon Shannon, Altan and Martin Hayes. He has performed with International Artists also, including Chuck Berry, Mark Knopfler and David Gilmour. More
recently Steve has just completed a Master of Literature in Education
degree at UCD in Dublin. His acclaimed thesis, ‘Musical Notation and
Theory in Early Learning: A Case for Intuitive Holistic Inter-Cultural
Models’, in which he has developed a ground-breaking approach to
teaching music in primary schools. Steve continues to play with artists including Luka Bloom, Martin Hayes, Tony McMahon, Breanndán Begley and many more.
