Jack of Diamonds Rhythm and Roots Festival

August 17th - 18th 2012

(FREE ENTRY)

Dublin City

The line up is practically a Who's Who of Irish bands in the Americana and related fields”

(Bluegrass Ireland Blog)

This August 17th – 19th, Jack of Diamonds Productions will host it's first annual Rhythm & Roots Festival in Dublin City, with a line up of 60 acts in 7 Venues. It will be a FREE festival to attend.

As Dublin's only Rhythm and Roots Festival, we will be showcasing the finest blues, bluegrass, rockabilly and folk acts this country has to offer. Performers such as Johnny Moynihan (Planxty, Sweeney's Men), Tom Hanway, who has shared stages with The Band, Bill Monroe and The Grateful Dead, Bill Whelan who in his life long involvement with the Irish Music scene has played with The Everly Brothers, Arlo Guthrie, Bela Fleck and Doc Watson, will be sharing the bill with newer Irish acts such as I Draw Slow, Prison Love, Gavin Glass and The Hot Sprockets.

It will be held in The Button Factory, The Workmans Club, The Grand Social, The Mercantile, Sweeney's Bar, The Stags Head and The Dame Tavern. As well the live shows, there will also be Workshops encouraging festival goers to learn traditional instruments. There will also be a City Busking Trail to raise money and awareness for the Musical Youth Foundation of Ireland. All this alongside stunning visual art and the 50's Dress Theme, will make this weekend one of fun and nostalgia for an era that had such an impact on the music of today.

Raised on country and western music in the outskirts of the Norwegian oil town Stavanger, Hans-Peter Lindstrøm now lives in Oslo where he is making contemporary disco and running his Feedelity label. Claiming that "Hans-Peter Lindstrom is closing in on Henrik Ibsen and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as being Norway's poster boy of choice” is obviously quite an overstatement, but nonetheless his original approach to dance music is currently causing quite a stir.

Hans-Peter never listened to dance music growing up, and the first time he really listened to it, was a few years back figuring out how to make it. He prefers quiet nights in with his family, and Hans Peter never really goes clubbing unless he's Lindstrom. As for artistic background, he used to play the piano in a gospel choir and the Hammond organ in a Deep Purple tribute band in his early twenties, before getting into Bob Dylan and folk/country music. Around 99' he got all fed up with music, sold his instruments, and moved from Stavanger to study literature at the University of Oslo. As retirement often proves unbearable to music lovers, he soon found himself busking the main street of Oslo with his guitar. One thing led to the other: he bought a sampler, borrowed a few 12"s to study the structure of dance music, and had a go at it.

Since then Lindstrom has helped to put Norway on the 21st Century disco map with a string of cosmic releases on his self-run Feedelity imprint, as well as floor-burning remixes for LCD Soundsystem and Franz Ferdinand. His 'I Feel Space' cut has become a timeless underground anthem, making it's way into DJ boxes right across the spectrum . His distinctive brand of freaky-deaky funk, disco, cosmic boogie and otherworldly house and techno sounds has rocked clubs and festivals in the four corners of the globe.

Most of all, this is a unique opportunity to see one of contemporary dance music's leading lights live on the Button Factory stage. An unforgettable night is promised!!
